Saturday Generation Starts This Weekend! (July 2nd)

Weekend generation on the Smith River starts this weekend so plan your time and location on the water accordingly.

Here is confirmation from folks who control the switch:

Dominion has agreed to schedule energy from one unit at Philpott on Saturday afternoons from 1300 to 1700, beginning July 2 and concluding September 3, 2011.  We have received concurrence from the Wilmington District office of the Corps of Engineers for these weekend releases.   However, the generation at Philpott may be halted if there is a system reliability concern or if water availability limitations are reached

I am aware that some folks are not happy with this. It is a done deal at least for this summer so we have to learn to live with it.

It will make for some real good fishing up near the dam and even down in the old Spec Reg section after they shut things off at 5pm. You guys with canoes and rafts can even ride the falling water down to the Bassett Canoe access and still have daylight.

Congratulations!

Go out to our Friend, Mike, from Mike’s Gone Fishing…Again.

The Outdoor Blogger Network and Trout Unlimited recently joined forces to create a contest for our blogging friends.  Mike’s entry to this contest titled, The Best Fishing Trip Ever, was chosen as the Grand Prize winner!  Please take time to head on over to Mike’s blog and check it out!  Hopefully soon we can read about his adventures in Montana!

And to make the deal even sweeter, he mentioned the Smith River in his post!

Thanks and Congrats, Mike!

License Fee Increases

New Hunting and Fishing License Fees Go Into Effect July 1

Effective July 1, 2011, some hunting and fishing license fees will be increasing in Virginia. This was the first license fee increase since 2006 and only the second license fee increase for hunting and fishing since 1988.

The basic annual fishing and hunting licenses for adult Virginia residents will increase from $18 to $23 which includes the $1 license agent fee. Annual youth licenses will not increase. Non-resident fees for similar licenses were increased by the same percentage as the resident fees. For a list of fishing and hunting licenses and the fees to purchase them, including the cost for non-residents, visit http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/licenses/fees/.

The Board of Game and Inland Fisheries enacted the fee increase at their May 3, 2011 meeting with an effective date of July 1. At that same time they created a facility use permit for Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF) wildlife management areas or public fishing lakes that will go into effect January 1, 2012. Anyone over 16 years old who does not have an annual hunting, fishing, or trapping license or a boat registration will need this new use permit. Users will have the choice of paying $4 for a daily pass or $23 for an annual pass to all VDGIF facilities.

For information about angling, boating, hunting and wildlife watching in Virginia, visit the Department’s website at www.dgif.virginia.gov.

It is the mission of the VDGIF to maintain optimum populations of all species to serve the needs of the Commonwealth; to provide opportunity for all to enjoy wildlife, inland fish, boating and related outdoor recreation and to work diligently to safeguard the rights of the people to hunt, fish and harvest game as provided for in the Constitution of Virginia; to promote safety for persons and property in connection with boating, hunting and fishing; to provide educational outreach programs and materials that foster an awareness of and appreciation for Virginia’s fish and wildlife resources, their habitats, and hunting, fishing, and boating opportunities.
